Narrow crown picture framing staples are made from galvanised wire that is bent into shape & roughly sharpened. They are called narrow crown because the middle section of the staple ( the crown ) is narrow. They differ from wide crown staples in that they are of course narrower, though also in their use.
They are primarily used to staple hangers onto, & packages into frames.
They are better at putting on hangers because the smaller crown bends less when fired into the cord. This means the join has less movement, & less possibility of working free over time. The smaller crown also means you can fire one of the legs of the staple through the cord (thereby holding it strongly) while still keeping the bulk of the staple above the point of contact with the frame.
When fixing the package into the frame, it is not as important to use narrow crowns as the wider versions perform almost as adequately. Though because of the larger crown having a greater surface area, it tends to slip & not hold the backing as well.
